Popsicle Stick House

Finally last week i got the Popsicle Sticks i was looking for and decided to do the one project i have been really looking forward to do ever since i started this blog, a Popsicle Stick House.

I wanted to make a simple house that an amateur would draw on paper and in the end i think i did achieve it. There are lots of tutorials on the internet but for a simple house i would recommend the one shown on wikiHow. So lets get started.

You need the following items:
-Popsicle Stick Sets of different sizes
-Glue Gun

1. Make 4 squares out of the Popsicle Sticks. This will form the 4 walls of the house.

2. Cover one square with Popsicle Sticks horizontally/vertically. This will be the back wall.

3. The next 2 squares will be the wall with the windows. Reserve some space for the window and cover the rest with Popsicle sticks. Cover the space around the window with a different color Popsicle stick so that it stands out.

4. The last square will be the one with the door. Leaving space for the door cover the rest of the square with Popscile sticks.

5. I wanted to make a hinge for the door so for that i took a small piece of paper and folded it into half. Then turn the square and stick half of the paper to the door and the other to the wall. This will make the door sway inwards.

6. Stick the four walls together using hot glue.

7. To make the roof i took Popsicle Sticks of a little bigger size so that when its finished it hangs off a bit on both sides of the house.

I made the roof in the shape of a triangle. So take 2 Popsicle sticks and stick them to make the frame. Make 2 of them.

8. Hot glue several sticks together horizontally to form the roof. Make 2 of them.

9. Hot glue the roof to the frame.

10. You will need to stick Popsicle sticks horizontally to fill the space to which ever part will be the front of the house.

One done place the roof to the house.

Your simple house is ready. You could choose different color Popsicle sticks to the roof to really make the house stand out.

Where to get your Craft Supplies from

This post is mainly for people living in India. Most of the materials can be easily bought from the stationary shop. But the quality of the material will vary. I bought some Popsicle sticks from my local stationary shop and most of it was either bent, broken or of different sizes.

This is a list of sites from where you can get the materials online

1. Itsy Bitsy
They have got shops all over India. They have almost everything you need for art and craft. You can order the materials online too. The rates are very reasonable and the quality is very good. I usually order from them online and have got my deliveries within a week.Orders above Rs.599 are free and anything below will have a flat shipping charge of Rs.59.

2. Amazon.in
I have tried Amazon.in too. You can find basic craft materials like Popsicle sticks, Craft paper and varieties of glues and paints here. I bought my Stanley Glue Gun and Glue sticks from Amazon.

3. thecraftshop.in

4. lulupu.com

5. crafterscorner.in

6. craftadda.com

7. kraftzone.in

8. craftgully.com

I have not tried shopping online from number 3 onwards but while searching for materials i came across all these sites. Prices are slightly on the higher side. Personally i would recommend ItsyBitsy.

Popsicle Lantern

You need the following items:
1. Popsicle Sticks
2. Tracing paper/Wax paper
3. Hot Glue
4. Push pin/ Needle

I made my lantern in the shape of a cube. You can choose any pattern.

Stick 4 Popsicle sticks to make a square. Make 4 of them in total.

Cut the tracing paper or wax paper to the size of the squares. Cut 4 of them.

You can leave it blank or you can make a pattern on the paper or you could just paint it.

I made a pattern and then traced it with a push pin making small holes along the pattern. Take the help of an adult to do this.

Stick all 4 papers onto the square Popsicle sticks.

Stick all the 4 squares to form the shape of a cube using hot glue. While using hot glue please take an adults help.

Put a small candle or tea light inside and your lantern is ready.

Balloon CD Hovercraft

This is a very simple toy/experiment to make. The items needed for this will surely be there with you at home. I have seen a lot of posting on the internet about this so had to try it out. So lets begin.

 You need the following items:
1. An old CD
2. A baloon
3. A water/juice/soda bottle cap
4. Push pin or needle
5. Hot glue or Feviquick

Take the water bottle cap and make a few holes on it. I used a push pin to make the holes. Please make sure that this is done by an adult.

Use hot glue to stick the bottle cap to the center of the CD over the hole. Put the lip of the baloon over the edge of the bottle cap. You can inflate it through the holes or you can inflate the balloon first and then put it over the edge of the cap. I found this difficult so used the first method.

Once you inflate the balloon just let it go on the floor or any flat surface. The hovercraft should glide through.

Check out how mine worked.

About Me

Hi guys. I am a software engineer but have taken a break after my daughter's birth. My hobbies include surfing the net, brushing up on latest technologies and spending time with my daughter who is 5yrs now by making simple art and craft with her.
So i would not call myself an artist but i wish i had the skills of an artist when i recreate some of the crafts. But being an amateur has not stopped me from trying out different crafts. When the end product almost looks like what i was imagining it to be even that is quite satisfying. My daughter loves some of the crafts they show on youtube and disney junior. While creating them she helps me out in decoration and also for trying it out.
With this blog i hope to share my ideas and hope to learn from all those creative people out there.
I hope you enjoy my site.

Pinwheel/Windmill

Last weekend we went to a craft mela in town. There were lots of toys made of wood, paper, etc. My daughters eye fell on a windmill. Thanks to it being a windy day it was turning nicely. It was probably the bestseller for the shopkeeper that day.

A windmill or pinwheel is very easy to make at home.

You need the following items:
A square craft paper or origami paper
Scissors
Glue
Push pin
Straw

1. Take a square shape craft paper or origami paper.

2. Draw 2 lines diagonally from one corner to the other. Mark the center.

3. Cut through the line from each corner towards the center but make sure not to cut all the way. Cut till about 3/4th of the line. Repeat for the remaining 3 corners.

4. Take a fold from one corner and glue it to the center. I used a glue gun for this. You can use any glue. Repeat for the remaining 3 corners each time gluing the folds at the center.

5. Take a push pin and make a hole in the center. At the other end push it through the straw.

Your pinwheel or windmill is ready.

The original color of the paper that i took is purple. I have no idea how the first four pictures became blue. Maybe some lighting effect when i took the pictures. :)
Lets see it in action

Popsicle Stick Gun

About 2 weeks ago i made a paper gun with trigger. It does work but is not very sturdy. Atleast the one i made was not sturdy. My daughter loved paying with it but after about 2 days the trigger started to bend and tear and it became impossible to use it. So i thought of making another one but this time with Popsicle Sticks so that it would be more sturdy and this one works beautifully.

So lets start.

You need the following items:
Popsicle Sticks (About 6 to 8)
Scissors
2 rubber bands
Hot glue gun

1. Take a Popsicle Stick and hot glue another 2 sticks one on top and the other at the bottom at about half way of the first one as shown below.

2. To make the trigger take another Popsicle stick and cut to about the size you are comfortable to pull. Slide it through the 2 Popsicle sticks and secure it with a rubber band. This will be your trigger.

3. Next step is to make the handle. Take another Popsicle stick and hot glue it to the end of the 2 Popsicle sticks. Stick it so that its slightly slant.

4. Now for your bullet. Cut a v-shape at the edge of the first Popsicle.

5. You can add another 2 Popsicle sticks at the top and bottom to make the gun more sturdy.

6. For your bullet attach a rubber band through the v-shape and the top of the trigger as shown below.

And there it is!! Your Popsicle stick gun is ready. Let's see it in action.

I would love to hear from you. For more ideas and suggestions please contact me on kripaartcraft@gmail.com
